Tell 4 Friends 3 Facts about Sri Lanka

Talk to your friends face-to-face -- that way they'll really listen... and remember. And then use your electronic networks to spread the word farther. This is how we'll magnify the voice for peace in Sri Lanka.

1. The 25-year civil war in Sri Lanka ended in May, but the peace is not stable.
For long-term peace, the Government of Sri Lanka must address the Tamil people's core grievances. This means ensuring all citizens of Sri Lanka are treated equally under the law, regardless of religion and language.

2. The Government of Sri Lanka is holding more than 250,000 Tamil civilians prisoner in camps.
These people were forced to flee their homes during the war and entered government-run camps for safety. Since the war ended, the Government has not allowed them leave. It is absolutely unprecedented for any government anywhere to treat Internally Displaced Persons in its care as prisoners, and to convert IDP camps into internment camps – even when there is a highly sensitive security situation.

3. The Government of Sri Lanka is increasing its peacetime military by 50%!
In this rapid, massive military build-up, the Army will jump from 200,000 to 300,000 -- to enforce peace in the Tamil-populated northern province. This policy is much more likely to spark renewed conflict than to be the foundation for real peace. Sri Lanka only has money for the massive military build-up because governments around the world subsidize the Sri Lankan budget with hundreds of millions of dollars in development and economic aid.
